Letters are the favourites with SANDF

Letters from their children and spouses rate among the most treasured gifts police and army officials stationed in war-torn African countries can receive.

South Africans are on duty in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Eritrea, Sudan, Burundi and the Ivory Coast, and efforts have been made to ensure they have a comfortable holiday away from family and friends.

Police spokesperson Capt Dennis Adriao said the police service had sent each of its 42 members in Darfur, Sudan, gifts for Christmas.

This was in addition to packages sent by family members.

"Christmas gifts from their families always go down well and they treasure any mail they receive," Adriao said.
