NSRI rescues fishermen in rough seas

Six fishermen were rescued in rough seas by the Hout Bay National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) in the early hours of Saturday morning when their catamaran hit a submerged object and nearly sank.

The collision tore a large hole in the hull and water poured into the boat, flooding the engine compartment.

Piet van der Merwe, NSRI Hout Bay deputy station commander, said the catamaran, called Pelikan, was taking on water fast and struggling in 2m to 4m swells, seven nautical miles off-shore between Hout Bay and Llandudno.

They found crew bailing water.

"Two NSRI rescue swimmers were transferred on-board with an additional water extrication pump."
