This site is fully committed to the South African constitution and all the values it promotes; I do neither agree with all of the content of a few of the sites listed in this section, nor do I take responsibility for it. Nevertheless I think all of these sites provide interesting material for further research.

ArmyTalk Email Discussion List
This list is intended to be a discussion forum for anyone who is interested in the military in the Sub-Saharan context. The forum is pretty active, so be prepared to handle a fairly high volume as well as a generally high noise to signal ratio. The actual signal makes it all worthwhile though, as does the community of users.

Defence Corporate Communication (DCC)
Defence Corporate Communication (DCC) is part of the Defence Administration programme and provides reliable, professional and cost efficient services to the DOD, supported by an achievable strategic plan. This is directed and accomplished through an accepted Strategic Direction Process. Its aim is to provide a corporate communication capability and service to the DOD. CDCC plays a strategic role as an integral part of the management team and of the decision making process in the DOD. Government acknowledges and supports the strategic role of corporate communication in the public service and in service delivery, and requires a single Head of Communication (HOC) across each Ministry and Department. Communication in and by the DOD is not only done by DCC, but primarily by the command and management cadre at all levels.

Jericho 2 (Arniston?)
The Jericho 2 missile development programme started in 1977, possibly with joint funding from Iran for both land-based and submarine-launched versions of the two stage solid-propellant missile. Co-operation with Iran ceased in 1979, but later reports indicate that there was then some co-operation with South Africa on the Arniston (Jericho 2) project during the 1980s.

South Africa and the Nuclear Option
During the 1970s and 1980s South Africa developed a nuclear weapons capability that brought it to the brink of a nuclear conflagration. During the last number of years a lot has been written about South Africa's nuclear program. Due to the scarcity of useful and relevant research material the writing has in most part been poor and aimed more at sensationalism than scientific historical research and objective writing. With the following paper I intend to describe the development, possible use and deactivation of South Africa's nuclear deterrent.

Fighters Over Durban
In Facts About Durban I wrote that an unidentified aeroplane had been spotted over Durban several times around the end of May and beginning of June 1942. The plane remained unidentified for a number of years until it was discovered that the Japanese Imperial Navy had conducted a reconnaissance of the east coast of Africa and that submarine I-10 had flown its seaplane over the city on a number of occasions. I knew that the flights had caused quite a stir among the population and had led to the imposition of a blackout on Durban, but there the matter rested.

The South African Bush War
The South African Bush War, is a little known conflict (apart by those directly involved) due to its remoteness and effective censorship by the South African Government and that of opposing forces. Even the younger generation in the subcontinent, knows little about this remarkable and complex conflict that shaped the Africa of today, and had global political repercussions. It was an important chapter in the Cold War era, and one of the largest ideological Cold War conflicts, but also interwoven with the armed liberation struggle of 3 the countries of Angola, South-West-Africa and South Africa; all in the process on shedding the colonial yoke. On the other hand, pre-democratic South Africa wanted to preserve its policy of apartheid, and acted as an surrogate pro-Western agent of the Cold War in Sub-Sahara Africa. For a more complete history of the SABW, explore this page and in particular the link to the BUSHWAR TIMELINE below.
